Ontario Place
Mayfair returns to Rosedale
May. 11, 2006
Rosedale and Moore Park residents will celebrate 60 years of fun and revelry as Mayfair turns 60 tomorrow.
The 60th annual Mayfair will include midway rides, live entertainment, food, a bicycle parade, wacky hairdos and more. This year's theme - A Groovy '60s Mayfair - was selected to commemorate the six decades that the community has held the community festival.
"The '60s were such a fun time and since it was our 60th, it just seemed like the time was right," said Marjorie Booth, general manager of Mooredale House, the community organization supported by the funds raised at Mayfair events.
In keeping with the theme, event organizers are holding a costume contest in which participants can win prizes for the best astronaut, hippie, Austin Powers, Tina Turner or Beatles costume.
Mayfair will also include a marketplace, track and field events for kids, bingo games, a climbing wall and more. At 60 years of age, it is the oldest community festival in Toronto.
"It started out as something small for the community and it's amazing to see how much it's grown," Booth said. "It seems like every year it gets bigger and better and brings in more people from outside the area, including people who grew up in the area and have fond memories of the earlier festivals."
Mayfair will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Rosedale Park, north of Roxborough Drive and east of Mount Pleasant Road. Local children will head down to the park en masse with a mini parade starting at Moorevale Park, near Heath Street East and east of Mount Pleasant, at 8:15 a.m.
